THE 34TH ANNUAL ADAMS AVENUE ROOTS & FOLK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2007 LINE-UP

 The Adams Avenue Business Association is hosting the 34th Annual Adams Avenue Roots & Folk Festival on Saturday, April 21, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Sunday, April 22, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, on Adams Avenue, located in the Normal Heights community of San Diego. The festival is free and open to all-ages.

 

This year’s Adams Avenue Roots & Folk Festival will include more than 60 musical acts performing on six stages. Among the artists performing at this annual event are Grammy nominee Mike Seeger, Carolyn Hester, Guy & Candie Carawan, Ross Altman, and Sparky & Rhonda Rucker. (See attached artists schedule*) Roots-lovers will enjoy a variety of music, including blues, old-time music, traditional folk, bluegrass and roots rock.  

 

In addition to the incredible music, there will be a beer garden, wine tasting, carnival rides, children’s activities and more than 200 food, arts and craft vendors selling their specialties throughout the festival venue..

 

There are some new additions to the festival this year such as a Roots Music Workshop, a Children’s music Sing-Along with Hullabaloo, Wine Tasting and a small Farmers Market.

 

Roots Music Workshop A music workshop portion of the event is also new.  This is a workshop to discuss and demonstrate the connections and influences of Roots Musicians and their music over the years. 
War, Racism, Sexism , Inequality: The Role of Music
Music has been considered crucial in all of the movements that address injustice.  This workshop will trace the history of what has been called “message music”.  The session will include live performances and commentary from Lou Curtiss, Music Historian and performer; Ross Altman, Music Historian and performer; Guy and Candi Carawan and Sparky and Rhonda Rucker Civil Rights Musicians; Ray Bierl, Musician and other surprise special guests.  The focus of the event be on connecting Roots music with development of the music of the 50’s, 60’s to the present that addresses the injustices of the times.

The workshop will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2007 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the social hall of Normal Heights United Methodist Church (4650 Mansfield Street). Hosting the workshop is Lou Curtiss, Joel Henderson and Ross Altman.

 

Hullabaloo Steve Denyes and Brendan Kremer make up the musical entertainment of Hullabaloo which will be performing on the Park Stage at 11:00 am... Families are encouraged to bring the children to the Adams Park Stage for an interactive singing and entertainment specially designed just for children. Hullabaloo is farm-fresh, free-range, organic kid-folk in a genre filled with musical Twinkies and Ding-Dongs. Hullabaloo is part of a growing number of artists that have found a way to honor and entertain kids without making their parents want to jump out of a moving mini-van. Steve's a folksinger and a songwriter and Brendan is a long-time rock’n roll drummer so; you’ll hear traces of twang, funk, rock, folk and blues in our songs. They play the time-tested favorites we all grew up with.  

Wine Tasting Within the Roots & Folk Festival there will be an area dedicated to wine tasting. Wine Tasting is sponsored by PRP Wine International, which exclusively distributes wines form over 300 wineries from around the globe. Come enjoy some of the world’s wines as tasting will be available throughout the festival. Tickets will be available for the Wine Tasting at a price of $10 for 5 tastes. If wine is not you adult beverage of choice a beer garden will also be in the venue as usual.  The Beer garden is sponsored by Karl Strauss Brewing Company. (Must be 21 or over to enter the wine tasting area or beer garden).

Farmers Market Plans have been in the works to include a small Certified Farmer’s Market in the Adams Avenue Roots & Folk Festival on Saturday April 21, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00. T he Adams Avenue Business Association is investigating the potential for a weekly community Farmer’s Market and the preview of this market is available for the public during the Roots & Folk Festival.
